"The utility in the volume lies in part in its format—eight chapters divided into broad topics (e.g., education), with a single page in turn devoted to a particular subject (e.g., nonmarital childbearing). The tables are easy to read, and each includes a specific source note to lead the user to more detailed tables…This work is recommended for academic undergraduate reference collections."
–Anthony J. Adam, Reference Librarian, Prairie View A & M Univ., Coleman Library (review in American Reference Books Annual)

Black Americans: A Statistical Sourcebook is a comprehensive, annual statistical reference book. Drawing on the vast information resources of the federal government, it culls the mostávital and current facts available on Black Americans and presents them clearly and understandably. The book is logically organized into chapters and each chapter contains uniformly formatted tables. Explanatory material appears at the bottom of every table, identifying the parameters of the data and supplying a full bibliographic citation.

The book is updated annually, and contains a complete introduction, a glossary defining all specialized terms, and a detailed table of contents and comprehensive index to ensure quick access to all material.

It provides detailed, easy-to-use tables on:

  • Social & Economic Characteristics: marital status; characteristics of family households; interracial couples; farm/metropolitan area residence; living arrangements of children.
  • Demographics: population of the fifty largest metropolitan areas; population by age and sex; population projections; population by state of residence.
  • Education: school enrollment and teachers; SAT & ACT test scores; high school completion & dropouts; educational attainment; number of degrees conferred.
  • Vital Statistics & Health: AIDS cases and deaths; health insurance coverage; births, deaths, life expectancy; usage of drugs, alcohol and cigarettes.
